Plot: A moving documentary depicts Estonia’s non-violent break from the Soviet Union.

Eric: The people of Estonia rock! How many eternally oppressed countries would organize a vocal concert instead of promoting bloodshed? Please see this film.

PU-239

2006

Plot: A Russian man dying of radiation sickness tries to redeem his family by selling PU-239 stolen from a nuclear power plant on the black market.

Eric: This quirky movie took me by surprise but I highly recommend it. I loved how this movie takes a serious, heartbreaking subject and humanizes it with tenderness and poignant humor. The dying man’s declarations of love for his wife are one of the best moments of dialogue I’ve heard recently. My sympathy for the man made it easy to overlook the staggeringly immoral implications of what might happen to the radioactive material he stole…

Kelly: Wow, I didn’t see this movie coming. I shot Eric a very skeptical glance when we sat down to watch a movie about “Pu.” But it was terrific! The unexpected humor made the rotten truth bearable. I’ve been thinking about it for days.

God Grew Tired of Us

2006

Plot: Moving documentary chronicles the emigration of the Sudanese “Lost Boys” from their refugee camp in Kenya to the United States.

Eric: I hope everyone who sees this documentary will see it and feel something. I was touched by the love these immigrants had for their homeland. Their descriptions of Sudan and the Nile river valley make me want to go there. Their loneliness here in America was heartbreaking. Their frank, less-than-flattering assessments of life in the United States made me gulp, because they were spot on.

[In Sudan] you say, ‘I am new to this place,’ they [strangers] can show you where you are. You can even talk with them. That’s difficult; you cannot even ask them [in America]. I do not know how I will get acquainted with this place.

That’s difficult to hear. I hope we as a society can be more welcoming in the future.

Kelly: Amazing documentary. I was incredibly moved by these young men and the tragic story of events in Sudan. I encourage everyone to see this outstanding movie. Witnessing their strength and perseverance made me take a glance inward and think about what I need to change in my own life to be a better host in this country to refugees and immigrants. I hope that we can learn to honor the rich and diverse cultures that grace our borders.

Inconvenient Truth

2006

Plot: Don’t skip the action between denial and despair.

Eric: I’m sorry it took me so long to see this important film. I appreciated Mr. Gore’s affable, easy-going approach in his presentation. Even though I was a receptive audience to the message, I still feel the consistently reasonable arguments should be accessible to the most ardent naysayers. You can even set the issue of global warming aside and appreciate Mr. Gore’s inspirational message about how humanity can tackle serious issues of all kinds. His reminisces of his family and childhood were welcome insights into our former vice president and Noble prize winner.

Kelly: I agree with Eric: I appreciated this documentary and it's message as much as he did. I'm looking forward to spending time on ClimateCrisis.net to learn more about these issues.
