2005

Plot: Big city art dealer meets her southern, small town in-laws for the first time.

Eric: Cute movie; funny characters. Whatever.

Eric gives two paws to Junebug (2 paws)

Kelly: Great movie! There were a lot of truths in there. I thought the unassuming way each scene unfolded was very authentic and touching. Everyone had their own flaws…and their endearing characteristics.

2001

Plot: A lonely literature professor dying of breast cancer tells her story in the first person.

Eric: This is my favorite Emma Thompson movie. I felt heartbroken that this woman had no family to care for her; but the compassion she receives in the end from her nurse blew me away. Get the Kleenex out when the woman's tough, old college professor visits her in her hospital room near the end.

Kelly: Ditto. It was a four-Kleenex movie--and totally worth it.

1991

Plot: Politics, back-stabbing, jealousy, and other mayhem characterize four concubines in a turn-of-the-century Chinese home.

Eric: I was surprised that a household ordered by culture and intense tradition cultivated so much wackiness. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the man married FOUR wives. If it were me, I would have raised a white flag instead.

Eric gives three paws to Raise the Red Lantern (3 paws)

Kelly: Could we just once watch an Asian film where most of the women don't die or go crazy?!

2002

Plot: An unemployed father fights the government to regain custody of his three children from church-run orphanages in 1950s Ireland.

Eric: It took me a while to believe Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) could be cast as a drunk, unemployed Irishman. But the movie is charming and so are his children, especially the young girl, Evelyn. I doubt it actually happened this way, but it's fun to consider that a young girl might have convinced the Irish supreme court to overturn cruel child custody laws.

Kelly: I liked it. But then again, I'm a sucker for Pierce Brosnan . . . and smart little girls that tell off pompous judges.

Far From Heaven

2002

Plot: Hilariously, impossibly perfect 1950’s family deals with unexpected issues of sexual orientation and racism.

Eric: This movie can’t be serious. Please tell me it was supposed to be a comedy or something. I think Far from Heaven Can Wait.

rating

Kelly: Far from heaven? I couldn't agree more. This movie is pretty close to hell.

2004

Plot: A quirky couple falls in love by erasing their memories of each other. Why didn’t we think of that?

Eric: I had a bad dream like this once. Umm, who are you? Who am I? I think I’ve been erased.

rating

Kelly: I really liked this movie. Cool concept! Is this doctor still in business? There are a few things I would like to erase.

rating

Eric: You're not talking about last night, are you?

Kelly: Who are you?
