Love Happens

2009

Plot: Eric and Kelly would walk on coals to see this romantic movie.

Eric: I’m always surprised when a chick-flick was worth the price of admission at the movie theatre. I thought Aaron Eckhart’s hypocritical showman and Jennifer Aniston’s quirky, yet thoughtfully mature characters were unique.

rating

Kelly: The story was a little predictable, but the characters were unique. My favorite character was the parrot. It was a perfect flick for date night!

2007

Plot: How many train wrecks can one movie have?

Eric: Screenwriters are so good at pulling the audience’s emotional strings AFTER the plot of a movie becomes unrealistic. However, it worked; I sniffed, I cried…I hugged my cats. Suspend your belief and enjoy the emotional journey the three main characters take.

Kelly: I cried, too…and hugged my knitting. (All four cats were consoling Eric.) The plot was pretty unrealistic, but the emotions were authentic.

2003

Plot: This is what would have happened if Bishop Wosley had owned a camcorder.

Eric: Haven’t we seen this before? Oh, that was the other movie about the other Boleyn girl. Enough!

Kelly: Eric shouldn’t get a vote on this one, because he slept through most of it. I liked this BBC version better than the other one. Interesting how they used modern film techniques and interviews in a period movie.

2001

Plot: Retired detective spends his pension on a decrepit gas station just to stake out a child killer.

Eric: I didn’t like how this maverick cop used everyone he met just to sooth his warped conscience. Weird movie. The ending was classic Jack Nicholson, though, and seemed like poetic justice to me.

rating

Kelly: A perfect example of what happens when a bunch of great actors get stuck in a really crappy, weird, senseless movie.

2006

Plot: A young engaged couple put the pieces of their life back together after a brutal rape.

Eric: I was very interested in the movie because the reactions of the two leads seemed legitimate and authentic to me; I had sympathy for both of them. Recovering from tragic events is hard on couples, their reactions rang true to me and I think the movie is very thought provoking. Kelly and I talked about it for days.

rating

Kelly: I agree! (See, we do agree sometimes.) I was struck by the resiliency of the main characters. Cybil Shepard as the mom made me want to laugh and cry at the same time, too. I didn’t particularly want to watch a movie about a rape, but this one was worth it.

2000

Plot: This is what happens when you cross Disney with Cirque du Soleil.

Eric: Who keeps putting period pieces on our movie queue?

rating

Kelly: That would be me. Sorry. By the time I figured out who was who, the movie was over.
