A Walk on the Moon

1999

Plot: Beware of a man who sells blouses out of his truck.

Eric: I thought this was going to be just another infidelity movie with angry people forgetting how to love and respect each other. But I thought it ended well and asked some probing questions about what causes people to stray…and stay.

Kelly: Hey, nicely said, sweetie. I agree and have nothing to add (for once).

Eric: Who are you and what did you do with Kelly?

Star Trek

2009

Plot: Spock goes back in time to reset the Star Trek franchise.

Eric:

I enjoyed this newest incarnation of Star Trek immensely and gushed about it when I got home. However, the day after I also felt a tinge of mourning for the lost campiness and morality-laced screenplays of the original series and movies. It’s all about action and loud noises, now. It’s not bad, just different. I had a similar reaction when I saw the last James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. Not bad, just different, and a radical departure from what we are used to. Change is good, however, especially in the Star Trek universe.

Kelly:

I am definitely not a Trekkie. One of my roommates in college was, and she taught me a thing or two (first lesson: “It’s not Star Track, Kelly! It’s Star Trek! Ugh.”) Nevertheless, I totally loved this movie. It stands on its own as a wild and entertaining ride. You don’t have to know anything about the characters or their previous story lines to enjoy this flick. So live long and prosper…and get to the theatre to see this one.

2008

Plot: An older woman makes a young teenage boy’s fantasies come true, and then haunts him for the rest of his life.

Eric: Hey Kelly? Can I read you a story tonight?

Kelly: Are you calling me old?

Eric: Ummm....

2008

Plot: Ready, set...hike this movie back where it came from!

Eric: I like sports movies but this one didn’t reach me. It was too campy and cheeky for my taste. It made me not care so much for the history of professional football. Oh, well. Go Broncos!

Kelly: This one was sort of a yawner. George Clooney and John Krasinski are easy on the eyes, though, and I liked Renee Zellweger’s costumes.

2007

Plot: Let's break all the commandments for the sake of revenge.

Eric: This movie was painful to watch. I could not think of a single good reason to make such an offensive story.

Zero Paws

Kelly: I never use the word hate because it is such a strong word. I hated this movie.

2009

Plot: Ambitious priest covets the papacy and plans to get it by blowing up Vatican City. Obviously.

Eric: I know Robert Langdon could not solve all those clues and race around Rome with only an hour to spare in between four murder attempts. So what! I had the same sense of wonder I experienced when watching The Da Vinci Code. I had fun asking myself “what if” all those mysterious things really are true—very enjoyable experience. I wish the theater would have been more generous with their jalapeno peppers.

Kelly: This movie was so fun! I read the book a couple of years ago, but I had forgotten about the twists and turns—especially at the end of the story. You will get your money’s worth in this impossible, implausible, visually overloading, action-packed story with some fun Vatican facts a few spiritual mind teasers thrown in. I loved it, even though Eric took most of the jalapeno peppers, and I almost spilled nacho cheese down the front of my shirt.

1985

Plot: Run away from this movie.

Eric: I discovered that I don't like any martial arts movies made before Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

No vote.

Kelly: Not sure why Eric thought a samurai version of King Lear was a good idea. I'm surprised but pleased that he took out the disc after only ten minutes.

2007

Plot: Independently wealthy, gorgeous detective babe tracks a starched shirt business man serial killer dude.

Eric: Most entertaining movie about a psychotic serial killer with a split personality I’ve seen this month.

Kelly: He scared me. Cool ending, though.

Nights in Rodanthe

2008

Plot: A love as solid as a house built on sand is in a hurricane.

Eric: Okay, so not all movies based on Nicholas Sparks novels are complete yawners. However, the best expression of love in this movie was given by the old guy played by Scott Glenn in a moving tribute to his deceased wife.

Kelly: This was a decent romantic movie until somebody died.

Nothing but the Truth

2008

Plot:

Eric: I confess to having always been confused about the freedom of the press and write to free speech issues as it relates to national security. I’m just not sure why people can expose government secrets and expect to remain anonymous. Even more perplexing is why a reporter would be willing to sabotage her family by remaining in jail indefinitely for contempt of court. A thought provoking movie, for sure.

Kelly: I didn’t like many people in this movie. I know I’m naïve, but I I’m not sure I understand why so many lives need to be ruined just because someone told the truth. I’m glad we have free speech in this country, but sometimes common sense get lost in order to preserve this important right.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

2008

Plot: This movie caused our DVD player to stand still.

Eric: Some movies should just never be remade.

Kelly: I prefer the tin-man-robot-alien dude from the original.

Snow Angels

2007

Plot: Suicide, missing children, infidelity, and a really bad high school marching band torment a cold, bleak, desolate Midwest town.

Eric: Too much tragedy. We have to stop renting movies about snow or with snow in the title during Denver blizzards.

Kelly: I was really ready for spring after this movie. Too many people stuck in a nightmarish life with no end in sight—and a really bad marching bad. Throw in the sub-zero temperatures… that would be my idea of hell.

Frida

2002

Plot: The painful (literally) biography of artist Frida Kahlo.

Eric: The bohemian lifestyle of these Mexican artists was interesting, to say the least. I was scrambling to look these people up on Wikipedia afterward to find out who they really were.

Kelly: I really liked the “artsy” portrayal of the life of this surrealist artist. The way they used her paintings to transition between scenes put me into the works and allowed me to really understand her inspiration. It was an outstanding movie.

2007

Plot: How to kill your wife by not killing your wife after going on trial for killing your wife.

Eric: This was a mildly entertaining movie with some interesting surprises. The “suspension of disbelief” factor in this film was too hard to overcome for my taste. Is it a rule that Anthony Hopkins has to play brilliantly smug evil people?

3 paw rating

Kelly: Anthony Hopkins really creeps me out. I thought he was going to eat her liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

2009

Plot: Two immortal brothers with retractable claws cause a Three Mile Island meltdown.

Eric: I liked the Wolverine better when his back-story was a mystery. I didn’t buy into the scene on how he lost his memory, and the Fat Bastard rip-off scene was ridiculous. Still, it was a fun movie for guys night out.

3 paw rating

Kelly: I let Eric go to the theatre to see this with one of his friends. I am so glad.
